Dark Heresy - Paths of Faith
Zachariah Constantin Helströmm
Zachariah Constantin Helströmm (callsign ‘Cutter’) is a slender, middle aged Human of around 1.75m and 65kg. Years of hard work, unfathomable knowledge and near-lethal levels of illicit substances have taken their toll on the man leaving him looking considerably older than his 42 standard years would suggest.
His hair is greying and thinning atop his head and his skin is as pale as it always has been due to the life of study and literacy he has led in sun-starved crypts, med-wards and libraries.
Taught at a prestigious Schola Progenium, Zach moved on to employment as a Serf Elect in the Storm Wardens chapter of the Adeptus Astartes and both have left their indelible marks on his psyche. Zach is incredibly self-important, truly believing himself to be better than and more important than nearly everyone else he encounters. When others out-perform him he makes sarcastic excuses or responds with vitriolic insults to avoid harming his pride. This behaviour makes Zach nearly impossible to work with for most people unless they are subservient and obedient.
For those who know Zach (and/or ignore his stubborn behaviour) he is a staunchly loyal ally who will stop at nothing to complete a given task. If he left to his own devices he will undoubtedly perform admirably at any task involving his mind, reasoning or logic. His chosen specialty is the path of the medicae and Zach is skilled at all aspects of biology, surgery and medicine.
Zach was recently chosen to lead the investigative team on Protasia, in search for missing Imperial Guard units and their officers. The mission put him in charge of several other investigators including Ghisliane, Lt. Xanthia and Attalus. As a side objective, Zach was given command of the Officio Assassinorum operative Agent 6-11-14 and asked to field test the living weapon during the mission.
Normally not a sentimental man, Zach does carry a number of items on his person in which he invests more value than others.
Zach wears this golden necklace at all times under his folded robes. It is an Imperial Aquila stamped with the Storm Wardens chapter symbol and the medicae Caduceus ‘snake staff’ symbol. It was Zach’s badge of office during what he perceives as the best years of his life, working as Chief of Civilian Medicine on Calcis. The Aquila is also an obvious symbol of the Emperor and Zach is a religious man even if he doesn’t display it often. This necklace and Zach’s attachment to it is the only real attachment he allows to slip past his veneer of aloofness and impartiality. He prides himself on being professional, clinical and precise yet this amulet shows his human, sensitive side, his faith and his fear of death.
Zach’s dataslate is a unique model made with the very best technology available outside the Adpetus Mechanicus. To Zach it represents a literal accumulation of the knowledge he has accrued over the years. Even though he could easily remember almost every detail contained within its labyrinthine memory core, being able to record new data and sort it accurately is worth more to him than the actual value of such a device (which is placed in the thousands of thrones).

You said you needed a savant right? A scholar? Take a look at this one, currently works at the Library of Knowing. You remember that filthy place on Fenksworld, that stinking mire of heresy and occult evil? They say that it takes a genius with a mind like a cogitator and a wit sharper than a blade to be able to sift through that knowledge and not be corrupted by it. Well Kat doesn’t like him and I’m inclined to agree with her, he’s too… quiet. You always have to watch the quiet ones, its never the boisterous ones who become psychopathic murderers or daemon worshippers.
I’m sending you this report as you asked because he fits the bill but my recommendation sir is not to bother. Anyway I have a team of acolytes watching him, they’re ready to pounce so let me know if you think he has what it takes. If you don’t I’m gonna pull him in anyway, I’ve seen the things he’s been reading…
Anyway this is Kat’s report.
+BEGIN CANDIDATE PROFILE +
R E D A C T E D
Trained at a prestigious Schola Progenium institution R E D A C T E D in the Calixis Sector, the candidate’s parents were celebrated adepti in their own right and were posted to a remote research post R E D A C T E D (ref: 691/R E D A C T E D) of a location and duration unknown to the candidate. During his schooling the candidate excelled at reading and writing, and passed combat and leadership training with an acceptable degree of competence.
Owing partially to his parents’ influence within the administratum and academic circles, the candidate was posted to a position within the ‘Storm Wardens’ chapter of Adeptus Astartes on the world of Sacris (coreward-trailing edge of the Drusus Marches, ref: 691/01933) immediately upon passing out of the Scholam.
The candidate spent twenty five years standard with the chapter, working as a Serf Elect in the bibliotech of the fortress-monastery there. The candidate’s main duties here were copying illuminated text, preparing oaths and prayer books, inscribing His Immortal Emperor’s praise on the armour of the battle brothers and tending to the bibliotech’s vast collection of information both digital and scribed.
Employment records pulled from the fortress-monastery indicate that the candidate was elevated to a senior position within the bibliotech within some ten years of joining. His roles then took on a more important note, assisting some of the chapter’s most senior members (including ex-Chapter Master R E D A C T E D) in selecting tomes and information from the catalogues, processing requests to the Departmento Munitorum, Administratum and Adeptus Ministorum for resources and supplies.
In later years there are reports of strategy panels seeking the candidate’s advice on numerous occasions prior to planning sessions involving missions to R E D A C T E D.
The candidate’s final years at the fortress-monastery were possibly the brightest. For reasons I cannot seem to uncover, the candidate was moved to the Medicae wing of the complex and began an ‘apprenticeship’ of sorts with the Apothecary cadre under R E D A C T E D. The candidate’s knowledge of the human form and its biological processes presumably self-taught through study of books and dataslates allowed him to take to the role with remarkable skill and efficacy. The candidate eventually became Chief of Civilian Medicine at the fortress-monastery, presiding over all matters related to the medical health and R E D A C T E D of the considerable number of human staff working there. The candidate even assisted in several surgical procedures on Astartes personnel.
It is worth noting that when the candidate left employment at the Storm Wardens fortress-monastery, his demeanour took on a much darker and more sullen atmosphere as reported by numerous character references gained during inquiries by myself and the rest of our acolyte team. The candidate, along with 99% of other human staff at the fortress monastery was honourably discharged from service following a disastrous mission where the Chapter returned from service with the R E D A C T E D in the R E D A C T E D (ref: 691/R E D A C T E D ‘Nemesis Incident’).
Since that time, the candidate found employement at the Library of Knowing on Fenksworld (ref: 691/56001) where the esoteric and often occult nature of the content and the owning family’s R E D A C T E D .. an important purpose for the candidate. He has spent the entire time since leaving the service of the Astartes (apart from sitting in a sump-bar, wallowing in chems and his own filth) searching through the dark, forgotten sections of the vast library trying to find information on the reasons behind the Chapter’s ill-fated mission.
This knowledge has led the candidate down some dark paths and he has learned things no sane mind should. The fact that he has remained seemingly uncorrupted by this knowledge (if you can call an addiction to chems, alcohol and cheap women ‘uncorrupted’)is testament either to his immense willpower or his deep-rooted heresy, for example R E D A C T E D.
I feel that the above is an accurate record of the man known as Zachariah Constantin Helströmm and due to his proven hunger for knowledge, addiction to illicit substances, association with heretics, criminals and mutants it is my recommendation that the candidate NOT be hired but instead be tried for association, intent and action by the Holy Inquisition.
